PN Leader Alex Borg announces another package of proposals for young people and first-time buyers so that more young people can build their lives in Malta

A new Nationalist Government will make young people and first-time buyers a national priority in practice, with a package of concrete measures so that more young people can study, work, save, buy their first home and build a secure future in the Malta they want to live in.

During a press conference, Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg, together with PN candidates Bernice Bonello and Joseph Grech, announced further proposals for young people, adding to proposals that have already been announced:

  1. Għajnuna biex jitħallas id-depożitu tal-ewwel dar
Assistance to pay the deposit on a first home
The Government will provide interest-free assistance of up to 10% of the value of the property, repayable over 40 years. The eligible property value limit will increase to €450,000, allowing first-time buyers to receive assistance of up to €45,000. This reflects the reality of property prices in our country today.
  2. Refund of half the interest on a home loan for the first 10 years
First-time buyers will be refunded 50% of the interest on their home loan for the first 10 years, directly into their bank account. This assistance could amount to around €46,800 over ten years.
  3. Stamp duty exemption for first-time buyers up to €350,000
The Partit Nazzjonalista will widen the stamp duty exemption for first-time buyers up to €350,000, so that more young people and couples can become homeowners with a lower fiscal burden.
  4. Five years without income tax on earnings of up to €50,000 a year
Young Maltese and Gozitan people starting work will be given five years free from income tax on earnings of up to €50,000 a year. This will help them keep more of what they earn and save for their future.
  5. A 25% increase in stipends
A Government led by Alex Borg will increase all student stipends by 25%, to help students and their families at a time when the cost of living keeps rising.
  6. Youth Pension Kick Start — €1,000 a year for five years
A Nationalist Government will deposit €1,000 a year for five years into a private pension account for every person under the age of 35 who joins a private pension scheme.
  7. Support for students who are parents
Young students up to the age of 35 who are parents will receive additional support equivalent to the minimum wage, so that they do not have to choose between their studies and their family responsibilities.
  8. More support for mental and emotional health
A new Nationalist Government will invest in more efficient and accessible mental and emotional health services for young people, with a clear message that asking for help is not a weakness, but a responsible step and a way of protecting one’s personal health.
  9. Better access to sexual health clinics
The Partit Nazzjonalista will strengthen young people’s access to sexual health clinics, counselling, screening and prevention according to medical and professional guidance, so that this aspect of health is also more accessible and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases is strengthened.

Alex Borg said that young Maltese and Gozitan people deserve a better future in their own country. Today, many young people, despite studying and working, are finding it difficult to save enough, buy their own home and build a stable life in Malta.

He said that, as a young person and as someone who meets young people every day, he understands their difficulties closely. He also recalled his meeting with MCAST students, where he heard their priorities directly and shared with them the Partit Nazzjonalista’s vision for Malta’s future.

Alex Borg stated that affordable housing has become one of the greatest scourges in our country. He said he has met many young people, couples, single persons, separated and divorced persons, those who have had a marriage annulled, and students whose greatest concern is how they will manage to buy a decent home in which to live and start a family.

The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader said that this package is a direct response to what young people are saying. He stressed that these are measures of social justice, because the wealth generated in the economy must pass directly to the people.

Alex Borg concluded by saying that this is not politics that remains written only on paper, but politics with young people and for young people. The Partit Nazzjonalista’s message is clear: young people must once again believe that they can build their lives in Malta, and that the country is once again on their side.

JJoseph Grech said that the proposals on property purchases will give a Fresh Start not only to young people, couples or single persons who want to buy their first home, but also to separated or divorced persons, or persons whose marriage has been annulled, who are trying to buy their first home on their own. The Partit Nazzjonalista has long been speaking about the challenges faced by those who want to buy their first home, whether they are young or older. During his intervention, he also referred to the arguments made yesterday by Clyde Caruana in an attempt to discredit the strong assistance that a Nationalist Government will provide. Through all the costings, which show how wrong Clyde Caruana was in the calculations he made, he dismantled every argument put forward by Clyde Caruana. He said that what we are seeing from Labour every day is a politics of negativity that does no credit to politics.

Bernice Bonello said that the PN’s proposals for young people are intended to give a Fresh Start so that young people can enjoy their youth as much as possible, while also helping those young people who are thinking from an early age about investing in a private pension so that they will have greater peace of mind later in life. She said that a Nationalist Government is also thinking of young students who are parents and wants to incentivise them to continue developing their skills and knowledge. The proposals presented today will be a crucial tool in fighting the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly among young people, while also guaranteeing a better service in the protection of sexual health. She said that a Nationalist Government wants to give our young people the best possible life in our country.
