From today, we start building the future.

Today we are here to take the Partit Nazzjonalista forward. To continue working for the people. To continue preparing ourselves to be the next government. To continue building on what we achieved in the last election. This election showed that the Partit Nazzjonalista is a living party, full of energy.

During the opening of the General Council which launched the process for the appointment of Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista following the general election, as stipulated by the PN Statute, Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said that this General Council was not being convened only to discuss the electoral defeat, but to decide what should be done from now on. He said that the PN respects the people’s choice, but must build on the progress achieved in the last election, including more than 13,000 new votes, six electoral districts won, a swing of almost 18,000 votes in favour of the PN and a clear sign of trust from Gozo.

Alex Borg said that the election did not elect the PN to government, but showed that the Partit Nazzjonalista is a living party, one that has rekindled hope and must now continue implementing the change it started. He said that the PN’s challenge is to be the Party of the Nation, one that understands people’s daily lives and offers serious solutions to the cost of living, quality of life, housing, health, education, traffic, the environment, population, and trust in institutions.

The PN Leader pledged that, by the next election, the Partit Nazzjonalista will be closer to the people than at any other time in its history, present in every locality, community and sector not only before the election, but immediately. He said that trust is not built during a campaign, but every day, and that the PN must therefore continue strengthening its organisation, professionalism, discipline, training, and the space given to young people, women and all those who wish to contribute.

Alex Borg asked PN Councillors to confirm him as Party Leader so that he may continue the work of renewal that began in recent months, including through changes that will make the PN more modern and effective, among them the creation of two Deputy Leader posts: one focused on Party Affairs and the other on Parliamentary Affairs. He said that, by the next election, the PN has a dual mission: to be a serious Opposition and, at the same time, a ready alternative government, one that holds the Government to account, speaks out against abuse and continues building the alternative that Malta and Gozo need. “I believe in this Party, I believe in our Malta and Gozo.”

Deputy Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Perici Calascione also addressed the General Council and thanked the Councillors, candidates, volunteers, officials and all the teams who worked throughout a short and intense electoral campaign. He said that, despite an early election and an unequal battle against the power of incumbency, the Partit Nazzjonalista was prepared, organised and determined. He stressed that the Party must accept the result as the will of the people, while at the same time reflecting, acting and moving forward. He maintained that the result showed that the Partit Nazzjonalista is on the right track and that this momentum must now be maintained, as must the positivity. He said that the electoral campaign once again rekindled hope and enthusiasm, and appealed for this momentum to be kept alive so that the PN continues to be built as a serious, renewed and determined political force. “We are fully back in business.”

The General Council was opened by the President of the General Council, Mark Anthony Sammut, who explained that this General Council was being held in accordance with the Statute of the Partit Nazzjonalista following the general election, to launch the process for the election or confirmation of the Party Leader. He said that the Party recognises that it lost the election and must examine where it needs to change and improve, while at the same time building on its best electoral result since 2008, with an increase in votes in every district and two additional seats in Parliament. Mark Anthony Sammut said that this result generated hope, motivation and a greater desire among many people to contribute, and stressed that the Party must continue its process of renewal and restructuring, while being firm against electoral abuses and in favour of a democracy with a level playing field. He said that, if everyone works together, the Partit Nazzjonalista will continue moving forward and achieve greater successes that will take it where it needs to be – in government.

In his address, Secretary General Charles Bonello said that, although the Party lost the general election, the PN made important steps forward, including reducing the gap by almost half, increasing its votes in every district and strengthening its presence in Parliament. He thanked the candidates, volunteers, activists, Party and Media.Link Communications employees, and all those who worked during the campaign. Charles Bonello said that this is a moment for reflection, renewal and courage, and announced that a wider process of renewal will be launched within the Party structures and the Statute so that the PN becomes more modern, open, inclusive and efficient, ready for the next electoral appointments. He stressed that this process is a collective project, built on unity, courage and the contribution of everyone who wants to see the Partit Nazzjonalista continue to grow stronger and open itself further to the people.

The General Council was also addressed by the PN President for Political Research, Mary Anne Lauri, who presented an analysis of the feedback gathered from more than 1,000 people and from the five regional assemblies organised after the general election. The report showed that Alex Borg was regarded as a positive factor who brought new energy, hope and enthusiasm, while the PN’s proposals were seen as serious but did not reach everyone sufficiently. Professor Mary Anne Lauri said that the analysis also showed the need for clearer communication, stronger structures and a greater presence in localities. She concluded by saying that, during this exercise, she met people who, while analysing the reality of defeat, were full of courage to shape victory. She reiterated that, with continuous work, tomorrow will be better than today and, with a Leader whose enthusiasm, energy and positivity are contagious, victory will come.

At the opening of the General Council, PN Organisational Executive Secretary Stefan Caruana read the minutes of the last General Council of the Partit Nazzjonalista.

At the end of this session of the General Council, a vote was taken on the Motion which opened the process for the appointment of Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista. The Motion was approved, meaning that the PN Electoral, Records and Data Commission has now been entrusted with leading this process in the coming weeks.
