We want a legislature built on seriousness and respect, and above all one that delivers results for the people

The new legislature which began yesterday should be one built on seriousness and respect towards the institutions, and above all one that delivers concrete results for the Maltese and Gozitan people.

In an interview on NET Television, PN Leader Alex Borg says that the Partit Nazzjonalista will be a constructive and responsible Opposition but one that is determined to hold the Government to account and remain close to the people

The new legislature which began yesterday should be one built on seriousness and respect towards the institutions, and above all one that delivers concrete results for the Maltese and Gozitan people.

In an interview on NET Television this morning, with Ylenia Montfort, the day after the opening of the 15th parliamentary legislature since Independence, the Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg said that the people made their choice and that this choice must be respected. He stressed that the Opposition will be constructive and responsible, supporting what is good for the country and criticising where necessary, but always with proposals and solutions, while remaining close to the people at all times.

Alex Borg said that the challenges which the Partit Nazzjonalista spoke about before the election remain with us today, including the rising cost of living, housing and quality of life. He said that politics should unite more than divide and that the national interest should always come before partisan interest.

On the appointment of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the PN Leader welcomed the fact that agreement had been reached on both parliamentary roles. He said that this sends a message of political maturity and mutual respect in Parliament.

Alex Borg said that the fact that the Deputy Speaker comes from the Opposition benches strengthens democratic balance, recalling that this is a practice that began under Nationalist administrations. He said that Bernard Grech has the necessary experience to fulfil this role with dignity.

The PN Leader also said that the Nationalist Parliamentary Group has a strong mix of experience and new energy, with 13 new MPs and strong female representation. He said that in the coming days he will also be announcing the Shadow Cabinet, as he continues to build a credible alternative for the country.

Alex Borg also emphasised the need for reforms in the way Parliament works. He said that Parliament should be more effective, more transparent and closer to the people. The Partit Nazzjonalista still believes that weekly Prime Minister’s Questions should be introduced so that the Government is more accountable before Parliament.

He said that it should no longer be acceptable for replies to Parliamentary Questions to take months, and that there should be more space for the Opposition, including more frequent sittings dedicated to its work. He also reiterated the proposal for a Standing Committee on Justice and said that childcare services in Parliament are a natural step for a modern institution.

On the General Council of the Partit Nazzjonalista, which will open on Wednesday as required by the Party Statute after every election, Alex Borg appealed to Councillors to look ahead and continue building on what has already been started.

He said that more people have once again started to place their trust in the Partit Nazzjonalista, but that the work is still only at its beginning. This, Alex Borg said, is a moment of reflection and renewal, in which the Party must continue listening to its members, remain open to new ideas, and continue to be a home for everyone who wants a better Malta.

The PN Leader said that the objective of the Partit Nazzjonalista is clear: to be an alternative government and to win the elections ahead.

Alex Borg also confirmed that once he is approved as Party Leader, he will present amendments to the Statute so that the Partit Nazzjonalista once again has two Deputy Leaders: one for Parliamentary Affairs and another for Party Affairs.

He said that the Party and parliamentary work face different challenges and therefore require a different focus. This structure, the PN Leader said, will help distribute responsibilities more effectively, improve efficiency and strengthen the collective leadership of the Party.

On his engagements in Brussels for the Summit of the European People’s Party, Alex Borg said that this took place at a time of major challenges for Europe, including security and defence, economic competitiveness, the enlargement of the European Union and the next European budget.

He said that Malta must continue to defend its interests, and that every European decision must take into account the realities of our country as an island and a small state. Alex Borg said that he also raised issues that directly affect Maltese and Gozitan families, including migration pressure on small states.

He also spoke about the positive meeting he had with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and stressed that it is important for Malta to have a strong and respected voice in Europe.

On the situation at the Corradino Correctional Facility, Alex Borg said that what has emerged in recent days is very serious and directly affects trust in the correctional system. He said that fundamental rights must be respected, and the same must apply where there are allegations of special privileges.

The Leader of the Opposition said that an internal inquiry alone is not enough, and reiterated that there should be a Magisterial Inquiry so that all the facts about the case of the prisoner who was found to have had access to the internet emerge transparently. He said that where there are shortcomings, there must be responsibility, because the people have a right to know the full truth.

Finally, Alex Borg said that politics from the people for the people is not a slogan, but the way he believes politics should be done. He said that the campaign did not end on election day and that the Partit Nazzjonalista will remain on the streets, in communities and close to families. The PN will continue to listen more than it speaks, be present where people’s problems are, visit organisations, businesses and families, and strengthen direct contact with communities.

Alex Borg concluded by saying that trust is built every day, and that the Partit Nazzjonalista will continue working to be a voice for all those who feel forgotten.
