Robert Abela speaks of justice but refuses to debate a Motion aimed at delivering justice

Nor is he credible when he attempts to distance himself from those who demonised Daphne Caruana Galizia, when to this day he remains surrounded by the same people who demonised her—such as Neville Gafà and Jason Micallef—who continue to sow and spread hatred against a murdered journalist and her loved ones.

The Government refused to debate an Opposition Motion calling for all the recommendations of the Public Inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia to be implemented by the end of October

Robert Abela’s Government has chosen to continue obstructing the pursuit of truth and justice. Instead of choosing responsibility, it is choosing silence.

This comes after the Government refused to debate the Motion tabled by the Opposition calling for all the recommendations of the Public Inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia to be implemented by the end of October.

During a press conference, Partit Nazzjonalista Shadow Ministers Mark Anthony Sammut and Michael Piccinino said that the Opposition went before Parliament hoping that, after five years, Robert Abela’s Government was finally ready and willing to implement these recommendations.

The Partit Nazzjonalista presented a clear proposal tied to a specific deadline. Yet Robert Abela and his Government were unwilling even to discuss it.

This shows that, despite all the Prime Minister’s speeches, his Government is still not prepared to do what it should have done long ago.

Robert Abela cannot continue claiming that he wants justice while his Government refuses even to debate a Motion that is necessary for justice truly to be served. Every further day of delay is a political choice for which Robert Abela must shoulder responsibility.

The Government made a political choice to block debate on the Motion. Robert Abela cannot continue using fine words in public and attempting to suggest that this assassination is unrelated to his time in government, while continuing to obstruct in Parliament the process needed to implement these recommendations.

Those who want to be believed when they say they truly seek justice do not run away from debate. Those who genuinely want to protect journalists do not drag their feet. And those who truly want a better country are not afraid to vote in favour of robust reforms.

The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue insisting that all the recommendations of the Public Inquiry be implemented, without further excuses. It will continue calling for truly independent institutions, effective protection for journalists, and political accountability for those who allowed the culture of impunity to grow and become entrenched.

Robert Abela now faces a clear choice: either he stops defending the status quo and takes action, or he continues confirming that his Government is part of the problem.

The Partit Nazzjonalista will remain on the side of truth, justice and a free Malta that is unafraid.
