During a business breakfast organised by the Partit Nazzjonalista, professionals from different sectors of society spoke about the need for immediate action, reform and efforts to restore Malta’s reputation and strengthen its institutions
The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue working to strengthen our institutions and restore our country’s reputation.
During a business breakfast held this morning at Trident Park for representatives from different sectors of society, Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said that, for Malta to emerge from this dark episode, which has left the country without justice following the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, everyone must unite behind the common goal of healing this wound.
Alex Borg said that education and reform are two key pillars upon which the future of our country rests.
The PN Leader said that unless Malta invests in an education system that nurtures a generation capable of forming independent opinions and applying critical thinking, all other changes will fail to achieve their full positive impact.
Moreover, reforms that should have been implemented long ago cannot be delayed any further. Among others, he referred to reforms aimed at strengthening the Office of the Attorney General and ensuring that citizens can have full confidence that justice will be served.
The PN Leader said that what has happened in Malta carries economic implications linked to the country’s reputation. We must now do everything within our power to ensure that what happened is never repeated.
Alex Borg said that this requires strong structures capable of ensuring justice, and the Partit Nazzjonalista will continue working towards this goal.
In a brief address during the business breakfast, held under the theme “A free country. A country without fear”, Partit Nazzjonalista Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione said that, in recent weeks, people who had never supported the PN had approached the party because they were genuinely concerned about the national impact of this case and the loss of trust in Malta’s institutions.
He stressed that the country cannot carry on as though nothing has happened. Addressing those present, he said that, as leading figures in the business community, their views were important in shaping policies that respond to this reality.
Shadow Minister for Justice Joe Giglio also addressed participants and outlined the Omnibus Bill prepared by the Partit Nazzjonalista. It contains legislation covering ten areas intended to strengthen good governance, combat abuses of power and increase the accountability of public officials, including through the creation of new offences and investigations into unexplained wealth. The package would also strengthen constitutional protections for press freedom and journalists, including through anti-SLAPP legislation to ensure that nobody can silence or financially ruin journalists simply for doing their job.
Several speakers also addressed the event, stressing that the evidence heard during the trial cannot be ignored or left without consequences, because Malta’s reputation, trust in its institutions and even its economy are at risk.
From a business perspective, our country’s reputation is important not only to attract foreign investment, but also to ensure that Maltese young people and businesses seeking to expand overseas do not encounter obstacles because of Malta’s standing abroad.
The speakers called for greater transparency and accountability, the implementation of long-overdue reforms and a collective effort to overcome apathy, defend the truth and rebuild trust in Malta among both the Maltese people and the international community.
Those who addressed the event included former Malta Chamber President Marisa Xuereb, lawyers Stephen Thake and David Zahra, and commentator Vanessa Macdonald.
A number of professionals from different sectors attended the event, accepting the Partit Nazzjonalista’s invitation to discuss the way forward towards a free country, a country without fear.
