Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg visits two schools in Ta’ Kerċem, Gozo
Every investment in education is an investment in a better world, a better country and better citizens.
As another school year begins, Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg visited two schools in Ta’ Kerċem this morning during a day of engagements in Gozo: a Church school and a private institution teaching English as a foreign language.
At BELS Gozo, Borg heard about the institution’s achievements over its 29 years of operation. BELS has 35 licensed schools, including its school in Ta’ Kerċem. It offers year-round English courses for adults and welcomes around 600 students from different countries each year.
BELS Chief Executive Rebecca Bonnici said the institution has always sought to innovate and was among the first to introduce virtual reality into lessons. Its aim today is to continue attracting visitors seeking both an educational and a tourism experience.
She stressed the need for the country to focus more on quality than quantity. She also spoke about the importance of giving visitors who wish to travel directly to Gozo the option of an air service from Malta International Airport.
“Private investment in tourism needs the Government’s support. For its part, the Government must ensure that Malta attracts the kind of quality visitor we all want to see. That requires the modern infrastructure needed to attract visitors who are willing to spend more for a quality experience”, said Alex Borg.
During his second visit, to Santa Tereża School, also in Ta’ Kerċem, Borg was welcomed by Head of School Sister Lucy Vella and Assistant Heads Maria Portelli and Joanne Sultana, and he also had the opportunity to meet the educators of the school.
The school, run by the Carmelite Sisters of St Teresa, has around 192 pupils, both boys and girls, and employs 28 Gozitan educators: seven teachers, four kindergarten educators, 16 learning support educators and a complementary teacher.
The school’s leadership explained why educators must be involved in discussions about changes to education policies and the introduction of new ones.
They also spoke about the school’s main challenges, including finding cover when an educator is unwell. They said that even one educator provided by the Government to step in when a teacher is absent would be of considerable help to the school.
Borg said the Partit Nazzjonalista is committed to keeping education at the top of its priorities.

Borg was accompanied on the visits, at the start of a weekend of engagements in Gozo, by Partit Nazzjonalista Deputy Leader and Shadow Minister for Tourism Alex Perici Calascione, Shadow Minister for Gozo Frank Anthony Tabone, Shadow Minister for Voluntary Organisations Beppe Galea, and Spokesperson for Family and Children’s Policy Norma Camilleri.
