PN Leader Alex Borg proposes a national productivity agenda at EY’s Annual Conference

Malta has the talent and ability to succeed. What is needed now is the direction, discipline and determination to ensure that economic growth translates into progress that people can feel in their everyday lives.

This was stressed by the Leader of the Opposition and the Partit Nazzjonalista, Alex Borg, during EY’s Annual Conference, held this year under the theme Future Realised 2026. He said that a country that attracts investment must also be a country that works efficiently. We cannot keep asking investors to believe in our potential while expecting them to bear the costs of our shortcomings.

The PN Leader noted that, according to EY’s analysis, real output per hour worked declined in 2025. While an expanding workforce has helped the economy grow, there are now clear signs that this alone cannot continue to guarantee rising living standards. Growth must strengthen the country’s foundations, rather than increase the weight they have to carry.

The PN Leader said that our country must invest in skills and education, in support to help existing businesses become more productive, in a solid framework that turns entrepreneurial ideas into businesses, in infrastructure planned around today’s economy and population, and in stronger competition, governance and fiscal discipline. He proposed a national agenda for productivity.

Alex Borg stressed that our shared ambition should be a Malta where young people can live independently, businesses have the resources to invest, workers have the tools and training to earn better wages, and families enjoy more time together because the country works better.

“Prosperity comes from productivity, confidence comes from credibility, and leadership is measured by results. This is the next chapter we want to build for Malta. The question before us is whether we will act in time.”
