PN Leader meets with Għaqda Bdiewa Attivi to discuss the challenges facing the sector and how to secure a future for Maltese farming

Land is our most precious resource, and we must do everything possible to protect farmland so that we can continue to enjoy fresh Maltese produce.

During a meeting with Għaqda Bdiewa Attivi a few days before the Budget, Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg said that, despite the challenges facing the sector, there are ways to help our farmers remain productive.

He stressed that the Government should insist that European funds allocated to farmers go directly into agriculture through Pillar 1 funding, rather than being diverted elsewhere. Alex Borg also highlighted the lack of a level playing field when some farmers have access to New Water for irrigation while others do not.

Both sides agreed on the major challenges posed by climate change, which are causing greater damage to produce, and on the need for stronger efforts to ensure that Maltese produce continues to be chosen by the catering sector, restaurants and hotels, as well as the public service.

The farmers expressed concern about the future of their livelihoods, as the sector is attracting fewer and fewer young people. Low profitability and the risks involved are among the factors driving workers away from farming. They called for more incentives for young people to keep farming in Malta alive.

Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply Toni Bezzina also attended the meeting.
