The PN demands an explanation of how funds were spent and how allocations for security and Local Councils will be used

This Budget failed to provide tangible solutions to the security challenges we face and the problems affecting Local Councils.

During a press conference addressed by Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and Security Conrad Borg Manchè and Shadow Minister for Local Government and Public Works Bernice Bonello, the speakers questioned whether the people of Malta and Gozo feel safe in their own country and whether the quality of life in their localities is improving.

They maintained that the increase in security personnel has not kept pace with population growth. The same applies to infrastructure, including police stations, which has not received the necessary investment. They said that many police stations are outdated and need refurbishment, while highlighting the numerous stations across localities that have closed and remain shut.

They also spoke about the need for improvements at the prison, alongside investment in its staff and their safety.

Both speakers also referred to the major challenges facing Local Councils and their lack of financial resources to carry out their work. They said that the Government is still refusing to provide a clear explanation of how the €10 million allocated to Local Councils under the Framework Agreement was spent.

They also noted that, before the election, the Government had promised to pass on a share of the eco-contribution to Local Councils, but has yet to do so.

The speakers said that while it is welcome that the Government presents its financial estimates, it must ensure that the sums announced on Budget Day and in the days that follow are actually spent where they are needed. Whether in security or in our localities, people must be the first to benefit from the way the Government spends taxpayers’ money.
