Robert Abela attempts to blame Enemalta to evade his Government’s responsibility

Rather than blaming Enemalta workers, the Partit Nazzjonalista is standing with them through concrete action.

Enemalta workers deserve support and compensation, not to be used as an excuse for the Government’s failure

Whenever Prime Minister Robert Abela finds himself with his back against the wall, rather than taking responsibility, he looks for someone else to blame.

After days of electricity supply cuts that left families in the dark and businesses suffering losses, the Prime Minister, instead of facing the public with clear solutions and accepting political responsibility for his Government’s failure, is now attempting to shift the blame onto Enemalta.

But Enemalta is not a private company over which the Government has no control. Enemalta is a government-owned company. It falls under the political responsibility of Minister Miriam Dalli and, ultimately, Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Therefore, when Robert Abela tells Enemalta to “speed up”, as though he were speaking to an entity with which he has no connection, he is attempting to avoid one simple question:

Who was responsible for ensuring that Enemalta had the resources, investment, workers and infrastructure required to meet demand?

The person who needs to decide what action to take is the Prime Minister himself.

It was his Government’s responsibility to ensure that the electricity infrastructure could cope with a rapidly growing population.

It was his Government’s responsibility to prepare for the continuously increasing demand for electricity.

It was his Government’s responsibility to anticipate summers with high temperatures and greater pressure on the network.

It was his Government’s responsibility to ensure that investment was carried out on time, before a crisis emerged rather than afterwards.

And it is his Government that must accept responsibility when the system fails to cope.

Robert Abela cannot act as Prime Minister when everything is going well and as a spectator when things go wrong. He must also remember that a Labour Government has been at the helm of our country for 13 years.

Moreover, it is unacceptable for Enemalta workers to bear the political burden of a failure in planning that they did not create.

These are workers who, throughout these days, have been working long hours, under immense pressure, in difficult conditions and in high temperatures to restore electricity supplies to Maltese and Gozitan families and businesses.

Rather than blaming Enemalta workers, the Partit Nazzjonalista is standing with them through concrete action.

The Partit Nazzjonalista is therefore insisting that Enemalta workers operating in these extraordinary circumstances be given appropriate compensation for their work, sacrifice and the pressure they are enduring in serving the public.

Enemalta workers are not the problem.

The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue to insist on political accountability, serious investment in infrastructure and a clear plan that gives our country an electricity system capable of meeting both today’s needs and those of the future.

It will also continue to stand on the side of the workers who, despite the poor decisions taken by those in charge, are doing everything possible to keep our country running.
