Leader of the Opposition calls for Parliament to meet urgently following the verdict in the trial concerning the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia
Alex Borg said that this is a moment that demands seriousness, responsibility and action from the country’s highest democratic institution.
“Where is the Prime Minister?”; PN Leader Alex Borg says Parliament must discuss the institutional failures, the reforms that remain necessary and the steps that must be taken to secure full justice
Where is the Prime Minister? At a moment when the entire country is discussing yesterday’s verdict, which has reopened a nation’s wound, Robert Abela is nowhere to be seen.
The Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg said this a short while ago as he left Parliament, after asking the Speaker of the House of Representatives to convene Parliament immediately and as a matter of urgency. This follows the verdict delivered in the trial concerning the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
In the letter sent to the Speaker requesting the urgent convening of Parliament, Alex Borg said that this verdict does not close the chapter on Daphne’s assassination, nor does it absolve the State of its political and institutional responsibility.
The Leader of the Opposition said that, almost nine years later, Daphne’s family and our country remain without full justice and without a definitive answer as to who ordered this crime.
Moreover, the judicial proceedings raised serious questions about how the investigation was conducted and whether failures, conflicts of interest or interference prevented the institutions from carrying out their duties freely and independently.
The Partit Nazzjonalista is therefore calling for an urgent debate in Parliament to discuss the latest developments and the institutional failures that have brought our country to this point; to examine the institutional and legislative reforms that remain necessary; to ensure the full implementation of the recommendations of the Public Inquiry; and to take the necessary steps to secure full justice and ensure that Malta is a country where institutions are independent, journalists can work without intimidation and no one is above the law.
Alex Borg said that this is a moment that demands seriousness, responsibility and action from the country’s highest democratic institution.
Parliament has an obligation to ensure that the search for the truth continues and that everyone who must shoulder responsibility does so.
The Leader of the Opposition was accompanied by the Nationalist Parliamentary Group Whip, Ivan Castillo.
