Protecting journalists remains a priority for the Partit Nazzjonalista, in Malta and across Europe

In this context, the PN welcomed the resolution tabled by EPP Women, Defending Women’s Voices: Protecting Women in Media. The MNPN, the women’s branch of the Partit Nazzjonalista, played a leading role in ensuring that the protection of women in the media received attention at European level and that concrete solutions were promoted.

The Partit Nazzjonalista continued to advance its priorities on the rule of law and the protection of journalists during the Political Assembly of the European People’s Party (EPP), held in Toulouse on 28 and 29 September.

PN International Secretary Beppe Galea met EPP President Manfred Weber, among others, and discussed the work being carried out by the Partit Nazzjonalista following last May’s election.

During his intervention at the Assembly, Beppe Galea highlighted the PN’s work to push forward the reforms required to implement the recommendations of the Public Inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The resolution calls on the Maltese authorities to use every legal means available to establish the truth and hold accountable all those who commissioned, facilitated or concealed the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. It also calls for the implementation of the recommendations of the independent Public Inquiry.

The same resolution calls for stronger protection for female journalists against threats, harassment and violence, including online, as well as action against the use of abusive legal proceedings aimed at silencing the media. Proposed measures include police protection where necessary, legal assistance, support for digital security and the effective enforcement of European rules on media freedom.

“The protection of journalists and the implementation of the recommendations of the Public Inquiry are commitments that must be translated into action. The PN is continuing this work with determination to strengthen the rule of law and accountability,” Beppe Galea said.

He thanked EPP Women for the initiative and the MNPN for their contribution, adding that the Partit Nazzjonalista would remain committed to working for stronger institutions, free journalism and an environment in which no journalist should have to pay a high price for doing her job and seeking the truth.
