Another Budget. The same problems – Alex Borg
“Tomorrow morning, workers will once again be stuck in traffic. Families will once again be adding up the costs in front of supermarket shelves. And young people saving to buy their own home will still be wondering how much longer they have to wait. These are the problems this Budget should have addressed,” said Alex Borg.
Budget 2027 still fails to provide the answers that Maltese and Gozitan families, workers and businesses are waiting for to address the problems they face every day. This was stated by the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista and the Opposition Alex Borg in his initial reaction to the Budget.
“Tomorrow morning, workers will once again be stuck in traffic. Families will once again be adding up the costs in front of supermarket shelves. And young people saving to buy their own home will still be wondering how much longer they have to wait. These are the problems this Budget should have addressed,” said Alex Borg.
The PN Leader said that the Party welcomes the support measures. Those who work and contribute deserve to be able to keep up with the cost of living. At the same time, people have a right to expect less time wasted, timely healthcare and a home they can afford.
Alex Borg observed that, after thirteen years, the Government itself is acknowledging the pressure its economic model has placed on infrastructure and services. Further population growth brings greater demand for housing, more cars on the roads and more pressure on hospitals, schools, water and energy supplies.
“People are paying the price of that pressure every day. The Government must explain when time spent in traffic will decrease, when waiting lists will end and how buying a first home will become more accessible,” Borg maintained.
He also stressed that businesses need concrete support to invest in technology, train their workers and offer better wages. Increasing tariffs alone does not make an economy more productive, and the impact on businesses and prices must be examined carefully.
The PN will continue to scrutinise the measures and estimates according to the difference they make to people’s lives: how much money they have left after groceries and bills, how much time they have with their families and how confident they feel about their future.
Accompanied by Shadow Minister for Finance Adrian Delia and Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Capital Projects Darren Carabott, Alex Borg reiterated that the country’s prosperity must be felt in people’s everyday lives. And after thirteen years, you have every right to expect better.
