A new Nationalist Government will reduce electricity bills by an average of 30% for families and all those living alone. My word is my contract – we will deliver.
During a mass rally in Bormla, Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg announced another important measure for people, this time in the energy sector. This measure has been carefully studied and verified by a team of candidates, professionals and technocrats, and Alex Borg said that this will be another page in the contract he is making with the Maltese and Gozitan people.
Alex Borg said that in recent weeks and months he has listened to and understood the realities of many families who are feeling the burden of the cost of living, bills, and the money that does not remain in their pockets. That is why, he said, the Partit Nazzjonalista is putting forward a proposal that directly touches people’s lives.
“I want to announce that a Nationalist Government will reduce electricity bills by an average of 30% for our families. We will do this while maintaining the energy subsidy, and in the coming days we will explain how this measure will be financed and how it will work,” said Alex Borg.
The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista said that this proposal was not created on a whim or in haste, but is the result of months of work by a team of competent people who are building a serious vision for Malta and Gozo.
He said that from the first day of the electoral campaign, the Partit Nazzjonalista has shown that it is ready, prepared and full of energy. He recalled that in these first days of the campaign, the PN has already announced major proposals in health, education, for workers, for families, for students, for professionals and for Gozo.
Among these, Alex Borg mentioned the PN’s plan to build a chain of hospitals around Malta and Gozo: a new hospital in the North with 250 beds, a new hospital in Gozo with 400 beds, the transformation of the Paola Hub into a hospital with 250 beds, investment in Mater Dei, and the building of a National Health Park with 60 beds.
He also mentioned the increase in stipends for students in the health sector to around €1,000 a month, a 25% increase in stipends for all students, five years tax-free for health professionals who return to Malta, the removal of tax on the first €10,000 earned by workers from part-time work and overtime, a €5,000 Child Trust Fund for every child, and free physical and mental health screening for workers and the self-employed.
On Gozo, Alex Borg recalled that the Partit Nazzjonalista is putting forward 110 concrete proposals to give Gozo a Fresh Start and to ensure that Gozitans are no longer left as an afterthought.
Alex Borg said that the PN has a history of politicians of substance who brought about great changes in the country, but that it is also a party that has always renewed itself and that today is presenting the people with a new generation of politicians full of energy, together with people of experience.
In his speech, he also paid tribute the politicians within the Partit Nazzjonalista who gave many years of service to the Party and to the country and who have chosen not to contest again. Although they will no longer remain on the front line, they are still giving invaluable support so that the Partit Nazzjonalista will be in government. From Bormla, Alex Borg paid tribute in particular to the President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and the Mifsud Bonnici family for the great service they gave to the Partit Nazzjonalista and to Maltese politics.
The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista said that this early election, called by Robert Abela one year ahead of time after 13 years of Labour Government, is a moment of national choice.
He said that the people must choose between another five years of traffic, cost of living pressures and a group of people who would have been in power for 18 years, or else a new team, a new generation and a Fresh Start for Malta and Gozo.
“Politics is about people. For the Partit Nazzjonalista, politics has always been about people. It was about people when we gave birth to Independent Malta, it was about people when we achieved European Malta, and it is about people today when we want to give Malta and Gozo a Fresh Start.”
Alex Borg stressed that a Nationalist Government will enter Castille to serve people’s needs, and that the doors of Castille will be open to everyone every day, from morning until evening. That is what the politics of service means.
He appealed to those who voted for the Labour Party in the past, to those who are thinking of not voting, and to young people who will be voting for the first time, to use their vote for real change.
“This is the moment to make the change. This is the moment to be part of this Fresh Start for our country. The Partit Nazzjonalista remains the underdog, but with you alongside us, we can get there. Our country needs a new generation of politicians. Our country needs a Fresh Start. This is your moment.”
Ryan Callus also addressed the rally and said that the Partit Nazzjonalista is the only credible party for Malta.
He said that over the past years, the Partit Nazzjonalista has shown through facts that it is a credible party, with ideas that today the Labour Party is trying to copy after having ridiculed them or voted against them.
He mentioned how, in Parliament, Labour voted against the PN’s proposals in favour of work-life balance, including extensions to maternity leave, paternity leave and parental leave, and yet today it is speaking about increasing maternity leave.
He recalled how Labour tried to ridicule the PN’s proposal for a consultation on the four-day week. Today, it is proposing the same thing.
In recent days, Labour mocked the PN’s vision for health — a sector in which Labour has zero credibility after squandering hundreds of millions of euro and leaving the people without hospitals.
Labour is also trying to ridicule the PN’s proposal for cancer treatment medicines to be given free of charge, because a person facing cancer should not be forced to worry about whether they can afford their medicine. Ryan Callus said that with Alex Borg as Prime Minister, cancer medicines ordered by the consultant will be given free of charge.
Ryan Callus said that Labour in Government has lost all credibility even with Gozitans. After leaving them for years with a clapped-out ferry, Labour is now promising two new ferries. Had Robert Abela truly cared about Gozitans, he would have invested the money he threw away on the Nikolaos to build a new ferry, instead of wasting money and time.
Ryan Callus also spoke about the continuous U-turns made by Labour in Government on mental health. After the PN had proposed a new mental health hospital near Mater Dei, the Labour Government rushed in front of the cameras to say it would build it. Shortly afterwards, it said there was no need for it and that two wards were enough, and now it is once again promising it in this electoral campaign.
Labour’s lack of credibility is also evident in energy. After Labour spent years blaming the interconnector for every problem in the energy sector, today it is speaking about more interconnectors. This is further confirmation that the PN’s vision on energy years ago made more sense than the LNG tanker brought by the Government.
Ryan Callus said that these examples show that when Labour runs out of ideas, it tries to take the ideas of the Partit Nazzjonalista and make them its own.
“Imitation is the best form of flattery. But when you run dry of ideas and make other people’s ideas your own, that is a compliment, but it also shows that you have nothing new to offer,” said Ryan Callus.
He also rejected the Labour Party’s propaganda about PN MPs who have chosen not to contest again, saying that while in the PN there were personal and free choices after long years of service, in Labour there are MPs who will not contest either because they were discarded, because they are afraid of what will emerge about them in the coming days, or because Robert Abela left them out of Cabinet.
Ryan Callus said that Alex Borg is a young man who made a choice of service, and instead of choosing an easy path for himself, he chose to give his contribution to the country.
“With the choice Alex Borg made, he succeeded in once again making the Partit Nazzjonalista a young party and in attracting many young people. Alex Borg has a very important quality: he listens a lot, and he does not only listen, but acts on what he hears,” said Ryan Callus.
He concluded by saying that Malta and Gozo need a Fresh Start, and that the only credible party for Malta is the Partit Nazzjonalista, with Alex Borg as Prime Minister.
