PN Leader Alex Borg meets GWU; both sides discuss various proposals aimed at creating better opportunities for workers and families
We need a budget that does not focus on the next election or on winning votes, but one that genuinely considers the needs of both present and future generations.
During a meeting with the General Workers Union ahead of Budget 2027, Leader of the Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said that the GWU and the Partit Nazzjonalista share a number of proposals based on common principles and objectives. Among these, he highlighted the need to ensure that the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is not taxed, to explore a working model based on shorter working hours, and to invest in workforce training through both upskilling and reskilling, particularly in Artificial Intelligence.

Alex Borg said that the forthcoming budget should build on Vision 2050 and contribute towards creating a more resilient and, above all, more sustainable country. It should provide greater opportunities for workers and families, enabling them not only to earn more but, more importantly, to enjoy a genuinely better quality of life.
He stressed the need for a change in direction in the energy sector through serious investment in renewable energy – an area in which Malta ranks among the lowest in Europe – to ensure greater independence in electricity generation.
The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader said that this budget should prioritise measures that serve the interests of the country as a whole, ensure that wealth is distributed fairly, and give young people hope that they can build their future in Malta.

The GWU delegation outlined a number of proposals it is putting forward for the forthcoming budget, stressing that it should be a people-centred budget that prioritises workers and their wellbeing, with particular emphasis on mental health. Union officials also highlighted the need for an effective transport policy and a comprehensive long-term population strategy.
This meeting held at AŻAD in Valletta forms part of a series of consultations being held by the Partit Nazzjonalista with social partners ahead of the budget. Also present at the meeting were Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott; Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Employment Julian Borg; Spokesperson for Employment Annabelle Cilia; and Spokesperson for Quality of Life Ian Vassallo Hagi.
