A serious Government with a strong economy at its disposal does not leave people in the dark

The PN Leader asked where Robert Abela and Miriam Dalli were during the crisis in Gozo. He stressed that the Partit Nazzjonalista remained close to the people and would continue working seriously while holding the Government responsible for safeguarding people’s quality of life.

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg says Robert Abela and the responsible Minister abandoned people during the power crisis; the PN will remain a present Opposition that listens, proposes solutions and holds the Government to account

A serious Government with a strong economy does not leave families and businesses in the dark. Economic growth means nothing unless people experience it in their daily lives and enjoy a better quality of life.

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said this during an interview on the programme Analiżi, broadcast on Sunday morning on NET TV, NET FM and social media.

Alex Borg said the power cuts that affected several localities, particularly in Gozo, once again exposed the difference between the Government’s figures and the reality experienced by families and businesses: families forced to sleep in their cars; elderly people who had to go to hospital because they could not use their medical equipment without electricity; and the tourism sector left without power at the height of the season.

“The Minister may boast about an investment of €140 million, but the question is what result this has delivered for people, who are still being left in the dark,” Alex Borg said.

The PN Leader asked where Robert Abela and Miriam Dalli were during the crisis in Gozo. He stressed that the Partit Nazzjonalista remained close to the people and would continue working seriously while holding the Government responsible for safeguarding people’s quality of life.

Alex Borg explained that the PN continued working throughout the summer because people’s problems do not take a holiday. The Party met the social partners to discuss the energy crisis and launched two consultation processes on planning appeals and the Equality Act.

“This is the kind of PN I am building: a present Opposition that listens, scrutinises and proposes,” Alex Borg said.

On Local Councils, he said that under a Labour Government they had been stripped of many powers, with the Government taking almost all those powers back into its own hands. As a result, Local Councils have been reduced to little more than complaints offices. The Partit Nazzjonalista wants Local Councils to regain their autonomy so they can make the best decisions for their respective communities.

Alex Borg also spoke about his meetings with several Local Councils, including those of Floriana, Swieqi, Sliema and St Julian’s. He said every Council faces its own challenges, which it is often unable to address because it lacks the necessary resources and powers.

Referring to the trial concerning the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Alex Borg said he had chosen to exercise caution out of respect for the Court, the jury and the right to a fair trial. The PN is following the proceedings through a legal team and will consider the necessary steps once the trial has concluded.

He said the trial had further exposed what was happening at Castille under Joseph Muscat. He stressed that, once the trial concludes, the Partit Nazzjonalista will work to ensure that anyone who was involved in any way in the assassination faces the consequences.

Alex Borg maintained that the Partit Nazzjonalista’s caution was not driven by fear, but was a decision intended to prevent any allegation that the Party had somehow prejudiced the proceedings.

“Our objective is the truth, accountability and full justice for Daphne and her family.”

The PN Leader concluded by saying that the Party would continue its work of strengthening and renewing itself in the coming weeks. He also announced that, for this year’s Independence celebrations, the Partit Nazzjonalista would return to the Granaries between 18 and 20 September.

Alex Borg said the Partit Nazzjonalista would continue building on the work it had begun.

“We will be there for the people and among the people: a serious Opposition today, so that we can be a strong Government tomorrow.”
