PN Leader Alex Borg meets the Malta Chamber of Commerce; discussions focus on the importance of planned investment across several sectors and the need to change the country’s economic model

The need for substantial, carefully planned investment that addresses both present and future needs was the main focus of a meeting between the Leader of the Opposition and the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg, accompanied by a number of Shadow Ministers, and a delegation from the Malta Chamber of Commerce.

During this pre-Budget meeting, held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Valletta, Alex Borg said that the Partit Nazzjonalista shares the view of the Malta Chamber of Commerce on the urgent need to review Malta’s economic model and deliver the investment urgently required across several sectors.

The Partit Nazzjonalista and the Malta Chamber agree on the urgent need for a traffic strategy, investment in transport, and investment in education to develop skills in technology, AI and other areas that are needed today and will be essential for the jobs of tomorrow. They also agree on the need for greater digitalisation across industries, including more traditional sectors.

The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista also spoke about the problems many businesses are facing because of the lack of properly planned investment in energy. He noted that another power cut had occurred that very morning. Today’s outage, Alex Borg said, shows that this is not simply a distribution problem, as was claimed during the summer: it is evident that Malta also has a problem with electricity generation. He maintained that it is becoming clear that, without the interconnector, the country would face serious electricity generation problems.

He also addressed tourism, stressing the need to stop focusing solely on tourist numbers when we know that, despite an increase in arrivals, revenue has fallen in real terms.

Both sides agreed on the need for the Government to work hand in hand with the Opposition, which has long been extending a hand of friendship, to change direction and work towards a more efficient and sustainable country.

Also present at the meeting were Shadow Minister for Finance Adrian Delia, Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Work Julian Borg, Shadow Minister for Planning Rebekah Borg, and Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut.
