We will deliver a radical change in healthcare for the Maltese and Gozitan people – not only in infrastructure but also in lifestyle. We must not only treat patients but also prevent illness. We want to bring care closer to you. No patient should be lost in the system.
During a press conference, Leader of Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg announced further PN proposals for the healthcare sector:
- The introduction of Care Navigators so that patients have a reference point to coordinate their appointments, referrals, medicines and services, and to guide them through the healthcare system
- The establishment of a Just-In-Time Command Centre – a centre that ensures services are delivered on time, monitors the entire process, reduces unnecessary delays, eliminates bottlenecks, ensures efficient use of operating theatres, shortens waiting times and prevents overcrowding
- The introduction of a Digital Front Door system – a single centralised patient data system to ensure all information is collected, coordinated and structured for greater efficiency, moving towards a fully digitalised system. This will help eliminate errors
- Incentives for young people aged between 15 and 25 through a voluntary Fit4Life initiative, providing a €300 grant for a smart watch to help them stay healthy. The smart watch tracks physical activity and is linked to vouchers for services or products related to physical activity
- The launch of a Cancer Treatment Guarantee ensuring that every cancer patient receives all the treatment they need free of charge. All cancer medicines will be included on the Government formulary and provided free of charge, as patients should not also carry the financial burden of their treatment
The Leader of Partit Nazzjonalista said that these proposals are built around the realities people face. Alex Borg stated that there can be no compromise on health and that a Partit Nazzjonalista Government will provide people with the healthcare services they deserve. Over the past 13 years, the Labour Party has failed the people in healthcare.
He also recalled some of the other healthcare proposals announced by the PN during this first week of the electoral campaign:
- To reduce dependency on Mater Dei, a full network of facilities offering top-quality healthcare services will be developed. Mater Dei will remain an acute hospital, but a new 250-bed hospital will be built in the north of Malta, the Paola Hub will be extended into a 250-bed hospital, Mater Dei will be expanded to meet demand, and a new 400-bed hospital will be built in Gozo to ensure Gozitans receive the best care
- A National Health Park with 60 beds will be built, focusing on prevention and rehabilitation therapy
- More Maltese and Gozitans will be encouraged to enter the healthcare sector by increasing stipends to the level of the minimum wage of around €1,000 per month
- Healthcare professionals will be attracted back to Malta by offering a five-year tax break if they return to work in Malta or Gozo
The PN Leader also said that healthcare workers deserve more than applause; they must be further incentivised. Within the first 100 days of a Nationalist Government, negotiations will begin on a new financial package for all healthcare workers to improve their conditions.
A new Nationalist Government wants to give healthcare back to the people and will deliver A Fresh Start for your health.
This press conference was also addressed by Partit Nazzjonalista candidate Ray Gatt, who stated that all the proposals being put forward by Partit Nazzjonalista revolve around the patient. Efficient and effective healthcare services are people-centred services. Reducing waiting times is crucial, especially when long waiting lists still result in prolonged delays. He also spoke about the importance of proper coordination and strong rehabilitation services for patients who need continued therapy to recover properly. Ray Gatt said that a well-planned strategy is needed for the expansion of Mater Dei, as proposed by Partit Nazzjonalista, rather than converting canteens and libraries into wards. He also emphasised the importance of incentivising more healthcare workers and ensuring services are always closer to the patient.
Stephen Spiteri, also a Partit Nazzjonalista candidate, said that healthcare has always been, remains, and will continue to be the top priority. The PN has always had a long-term vision: it built Mater Dei Hospital – a state-of-the-art hospital which a Labour Government had once claimed was too small, yet despite population growth, left it unchanged. Partit Nazzjonalista is presenting an infrastructure plan that can meet the increased demand in our country. He said that a Nationalist Government always placed the patient at the centre. Another example of this is the Oncology Centre, where the PN sought to provide the best possible care for cancer patients. Today, there are patients who are not receiving the same level of care available in Europe and must turn to the Community Chest Fund to access it. This is why the Cancer Treatment Guarantee is crucial – it ensures that cancer patients receive the best treatment for their condition free of charge through the Government formulary. 30.04.202
