After Labour was found guilty of taking over another private property, the owners were forced to take further action to have it vacate its Valletta club

When, last February, the Constitutional Court found the Labour Party guilty of taking over private property in Republic Street, Valletta, and retaining control of it for 70 years, Labour said it would respect the Court’s decision, “as it always does”.

Seven months have passed since then, and we have now learnt that Labour had still not vacated the property. The owners were therefore forced to go back to Court, turning to the Rent Regulation Board, arguing that despite the Constitutional Court’s judgment they continued to suffer further damages because the property had not been vacated.

With the private owners of the premises in Republic Street left with no other option but to take their case before the Rent Regulation Board, the Magistrate has now ordered Labour to vacate the building, which it continued to use even after the Constitutional Court’s ruling. The Labour Party must do so within one month.

Following the February judgment, which found Labour responsible for breaching the fundamental rights of the owners of the property, it is the public that is being made to foot the bill for Labour’s actions. In the case of the Labour Party club in Valletta, the Court ordered the State to pay €254,000 to the owners.

This means that, in recent months, Labour has accumulated more than €1,600,000 in compensation arising from abuses involving private property — all of which must be paid from the taxes of the Maltese people.
