PN Leader meets the MDA; discussions cover various issues relating to development in Malta, with agreement that infrastructure must be planned before development
We must ensure that we have the kind of development that the Maltese people can be proud of.
During a meeting with the Malta Developers Association (MDA), the Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg said that development is an important sector for the country’s economy, but that all development must be properly planned.
He stressed the importance of an aesthetics policy to ensure that buildings enhance their surroundings, a skyline policy for Malta, and a discussion on revising the local plans, which have remained unchanged since 2006.
He agreed with the MDA’s calls for infrastructure to be planned before development, rather than the other way round, and on the need for Malta to reduce its dependence on other countries for energy by investing seriously in renewable energy.
Both sides agreed on the need for greater investment in the country’s infrastructure, including roads, energy and sewerage, and on the need for agreement between the two parties on a mass transport system, so that the project continues even when there is a change of government.
For its part, the MDA said that, alongside reform of the appeals process, a comprehensive reform of policies is also needed to reflect today’s realities. It also highlighted the need for schools specialising in skills related to the development sector, a proposal also being put forward by the Partit Nazzjonalista to provide specialised training in different skills.
The PN Leader said that this Budget must pave the way for the country from now until 2050, and that we must ensure that the growth we are experiencing today is both sustainable and benefits everyone.
Also present at the meeting were Shadow Minister for Finance Adrian Delia, Shadow Minister for Planning Rebekah Borg, Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott, Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Employment Julian Borg, and Shadow Minister for Accomodation and Lands Stanley Zammit.
The meeting, which forms part of a series of pre-Budget meetings, was held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Valletta.
