We must invest more in our workers to equip them with the skills needed in a changing world

The emphasis being placed by UĦM Voice of the Workers on the need for serious investment in reskilling and upskilling is particularly relevant if we want a workforce equipped with the skills required for the jobs of today and tomorrow. This would not only ensure that workers acquire the new skills they need in an ever-changing world of work, but would also pave the way for genuine improvements in productivity.

Opposition and PN Leader Alex Borg says UĦM Voice of the Workers’ emphasis on reskilling and upskilling is particularly relevant if we want a skilled workforce that contributes to increased productivity

During a meeting with a delegation from UĦM Voice of the Workers ahead of Budget 2027, Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg recalled that the PN had proposed a Skills Card in its electoral manifesto to provide workers with opportunities to develop new skills through training.

He also referred to several other UĦM proposals that are in line with those of the PN, including proposals for a shorter working week to allow workers to spend more time with their loved ones and on themselves. The Partit Nazzjonalista has long been calling for a national discussion on a shorter working week and on how remote working can be expanded. Such measures could make workers’ lives easier while maintaining the required levels of productivity.

Both sides agreed that we must stop viewing workers solely in terms of their employment and recognise that they are human beings who have the right to live and enjoy life beyond work.

UĦM is also proposing the removal of tax and social security contributions on the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), as well as greater support for parents until their children reach the age of three, enabling them to spend more time with their children. The union is also calling for additional support for people who wish to care for their relatives, through financial assistance and special leave, so that those taking on caring responsibilities do not face further difficulties in their working lives.

The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader said that if we genuinely want to encourage more people to start a family, we must ensure that they are offered not only financial assistance but also opportunities to spend more time with their children.

Also present for the meeting, which was held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in the AŻAD building in Valletta, were Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Employment Julian Borg, Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott and Spokesperson for Employment Annabelle Cilia.

This was another in a series of meetings being held by the Partit Nazzjonalista with social partners ahead of the Budget, which is due to be presented in the coming days.
