Affordable housing at the centre of a discussion involving Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg

The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader said that prospective buyers cannot wait years for a solution. Among other measures, he highlighted the need for an effective one-stop shop to reduce bureaucracy across the various authorities, which discourages prospective buyers.

For us to be able to say that economic growth in our country is reaching everyone fairly, it must give everyone who wishes to own their own home the opportunity to fulfil that dream.

During a discussion focusing on affordable housing this morning, Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said that, despite the various schemes introduced over the years, becoming a homeowner is now more difficult than ever.

He said that this is being felt not only by young couples but also by single or separated people, as well as older people looking to move to a smaller home.

Also participating in the discussion were Andrew Bugeja, an estate agent and MDA member, Julie Ann Camilleri, a student and Social Policy Officer within KSU, Kamra tal-Periti President Andre Pizzuto, and family lawyer Stephen Thake.

Among other issues, they discussed the bureaucracy involved in purchasing a property and the financial difficulties people face when buying a home in today’s circumstances.

Shadow Minister for Housing and Lands Stanley Zammit said that property prices had risen by almost 7% in a year, while household incomes had increased by an average of just 4%. This further illustrates how the gap between property price increases and income growth continues to widen, making it increasingly difficult to buy a home.

The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader said that prospective buyers cannot wait years for a solution. Among other measures, he highlighted the need for an effective one-stop shop to reduce bureaucracy across the various authorities, which discourages prospective buyers.

“To truly ensure that everyone feels the benefits of growth, it must give those who want to buy their own home the opportunity to do so,” Alex Borg concluded.

This discussion formed part of the Partit Nazzjonalista’s consultation process with stakeholders and social partners ahead of the Budget, and was moderated by Neil Camenzuli.
