A Fresh Start for first-time buyers: up to €45,000 for the deposit and up to €46,800 in assistance on home loan interest

PN Leader Alex Borg in Qormi: A new PN Government will help young people, couples, single persons and separated persons buy their first home
A new PN Government will provide direct assistance to all those who want to buy their first home, through two measures that address, in a real way, one of the biggest challenges facing young people, couples, single persons and separated persons: housing affordability.
The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg announced these two proposals during a political rally in Qormi, where he stated that a new PN Government will enter into an assistance agreement not with Electrogas, but with young people and with Maltese and Gozitan families who want to build a future in their own country.
1. Assistance of up to €45,000 for the deposit on a first property
A new PN Government will extend the scheme that gives first-time buyers an amount equivalent to 10% of the value of the property, interest-free, to be repaid over 40 years together with the home loan. The PN will also double the property value limit eligible under this scheme from €225,000 to €450,000, to better reflect today’s real prices. This means that a first-time buyer could receive assistance of up to €45,000 to cover the deposit on their first home.
2. Refund of half of the home loan interest on each repayment for the first 10 years
A new PN Government will refund half of the home loan interest on each repayment for the first 10 years. This assistance will be paid every month, directly into the buyer’s bank account, to reduce the burden of repayments during the crucial years when an individual or couple needs it most. Through this measure, first-time buyers could benefit from up to around €46,800 in direct assistance over the first 10 years of their loan.

Alex Borg said that housing affordability has become one of the heaviest burdens on young people and families. He said he meets many young couples who are afraid they will not be able to find a decent place where they can start their family, as well as worried parents whose children cannot build a future in their own country.
The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista said that under a new PN Government, the wealth created in the Maltese economy will go back to the people. He said the PN’s policy is clear: a new economy that creates added value, without placing additional burdens on infrastructure, population and families, and where the wealth generated by Maltese workers and businesses is reinvested back into them.

Alex Borg made a clear commitment that every euro generated in Malta’s economy under a new PN Government will go directly to the people. He recalled that this is the same principle behind the PN’s proposals for a 30% reduction in electricity bills for all families, a drastic tax cut for everyone, increases in pensions for all elderly people, and an increase in stipends for all students.
This is the difference from a Labour Government that fills Malta with billboards and advertising, but leaves people stuck in traffic, suffocated in their own country, waiting for operations, suffering power cuts, and paying the price for bad decisions such as Vitals, Electrogas, mass transit consultancies and the gravel at Ta’ Qali.
During the rally in Qormi, Alex Borg said that the early election was not called because the country needed it, but because Robert Abela needed it in order to try to remain glued to the seat of power. He said that had the Government truly wanted to deliver, it had 13 years in which to do so.
The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista also said that many people are tired of promises, tired of the division between red and blue, and tired of politics that forgets the citizen. He said that people are quietly assessing, from their own homes, who truly wants to deliver and who is deceiving them. Alex Borg stressed that the vote is the people’s voice, and that when a person decides not to vote, they are allowing someone else to decide for them.
He appealed to those who will be voting for the first time, to those who are considering not voting, and to those who in the past believed in the Labour Party, to use their vote on 30 May to give Malta A Fresh Start.
“This is an election about the future of families, young people, parents, the elderly, and everyone who wants a country that works for them and not against them. Let us together give this country A Fresh Start,” said Alex Borg.
At the beginning of his speech, the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista thanked the other two speakers who addressed the activity: Ralph Puli, Minority Leader in Qormi, and Conrad Borg Manché, former Labour Mayor of Gżira and today a Partit Nazzjonalista candidate.

Conrad Borg Manché said that his presence at a Partit Nazzjonalista activity is not about choosing one political colour over another, but about principles, conscience and love for Malta. He said that after years serving as Mayor on behalf of the Labour Party, he understood that the Labour Government had moved away from what it was meant to represent, and is increasingly placing the interests of the few before the interests of communities, families and ordinary people.
He recalled his fight in favour of access to Manoel Island and against the attempt to place a petrol station in Gżira’s only public garden. He said that these experiences opened his eyes to a Government which, in his words, listens more to those close to power than to residents.
He said he could no longer remain part of a party that had lost its values, and that today he wants to continue serving the country with the Partit Nazzjonalista.
“I believe in Alex. I believe he is genuine. And I believe the country needs the Partit Nazzjonalista. To Labourites I say that the workers’ party we once believed in is no longer there. Do not let fear hold you back. Our loyalty should not be towards a political colour, but towards our children, our families, and our Malta,” he said.
For his part, Ralph Puli said that the economy must serve the person, not the person serve the economy. He stated that economic growth that does not lead to a better quality of life, less traffic, better services and more money in people’s pockets is not delivering real results.

Ralph Puli said that the proposals of the Partit Nazzjonalista build on the vision of PN Governments which modernised the Maltese economy and created new sectors such as financial services, gaming, aviation and pharmaceuticals. He also referred to measures such as the widening of tax brackets, the reduction in tax for micro-enterprises, the removal of tax on the first €10,000 from overtime and part-time work, the removal of tax on COLA, and the increase in the VAT exemption threshold to €70,000.
Ralph Puli concluded by thanking all those who served for the benefit of this locality. He said that Qormi, Malta and Gozo need A Fresh Start; they need a more sustainable economy that is measured not only in numbers, but in people’s quality of life.
