The time for slogans is over: the Government must take concrete action to safeguard the wellbeing of the Maltese people
Gallup’s 2025 report on global emotional health ranks the Maltese as the second most worried people in the world.
READ MOREThe Nationalist Party is the first political party to be established in Malta. Since the very beginning, it had a clear direction, based on the values of freedom, democracy, solidarity, and social justice.
As a centre-right party, we believe in a strong and sustainable economy that creates opportunities for everyone, by placing people at the heart of the decisions being taken. We also uphold the value of life and believe that everyone has the right to live with dignity.
Today, the Nationalist Party continues to work so that Malta can truly move forward, with stronger institutions and a better quality of life for all.
The Statute of the Nationalist Party is the main document that explains how our Party is run and how it functions. It sets out the rules on membership, how officials are elected, and how committees operate.
It ensures that the Party works in a democratic and transparent way, giving all members a voice in decision-making. At the same time, it helps the Party to continue evolving with everchanging times, while remaining firmly rooted in its core values and principles.
The first Nationalist politicians were known as the Anti-Reformists. They were led by Fortunato Mizzi and founded the Partito Nazionale, which worked to secure greater autonomy for Malta and eventually self-government.
The Nationalist Party was officially established in 1926.
The Nationalist Party was the political force that led Malta to its Independence, a historic milestone that transformed our country’s future. From then on, the Party played a central role in shaping Malta as a modern, European and democratic state, continuing to leave its mark at key moments in our nation’s history.
Under a Nationalist administration, Maltese and Gozitans chose to directly shape our collective story once again and voted for Malta to join the European Union in 2004, something the Nationalist Party believed and campaigned in favour for and is still firmly in favour for today. This was a historic and vital step that opened many new opportunities for the country, opportunities that Maltese and Gozitan citizens continue to benefit from today.
The organisational structure of the Nationalist Party is made up of the following bodies:
• the General Council
• the General Convention
• the Executive Committee,
• the Administrative Council
• the Parliamentary Group
• the Regional Committees
• the Sectional Committees
The first four are the bodies responsible for shaping the Party’s strategy and direction, in line with our Statute, which sets out its goals and principles while establishing the administrative structure and regulating membership.

Party Officials, appointed in accordance with the provisions of the Statute, are as follows:
The General Council is the highest organ and has the authority to approve our electoral programme, the Secretary General’s annual report, and to decide on any matter proposed by the Executive Committee, as well as on any issue brought before it at the request of our members, as provided by the Statute. It is also the body empowered to amend the Statute.
The General Convention is made up of all paid-up Party members (‘tesserati’). It discusses policy-related matters, elects the Party Leader and Deputy Leader/s, and is convened to confirm the top officials within three months from the start of each legislature.
The Executive Committee is the Party organ responsible for general political debate within the Party and, subsequently, for the formulation, adoption, and implementation of the Nationalist Party’s policies. It also convenes the General Council, decides on all matters related to membership, approves the electoral programme, endorses the Party’s candidates for elections, decides on any matter not specifically reserved for other organs, and approves the statutes of all branches and sections of the Party.
The Administrative Council is responsible for the overall administration of the Party. This includes approving all Party employees, appointing Party representatives on any entity in which the Party has an interest, overseeing the general organisation of the Party’s work and activities, handling all matters related to Sectional Committees, managing disciplinary cases, overseeing Party property, and appointing representatives of the Secretary General on the Sectional Committees.
The Nationalist Party Parliamentary Group is made up of Members of Parliament elected to the Maltese Parliament, who represent the people and hold the Government accountable. This group works tirelessly to propose legislation, scrutinise the Government’s work, and put forward practical solutions to the challenges facing the country, always in the national interest.
At present, the Nationalist Party’s Parliamentary Group is composed of 35 MPs, each with their own area of responsibility. Despite being in Opposition, the Parliamentary Group continues to work on proposals aimed at improving people’s quality of life.
The Nationalist Party’s Members of the European Parliament represent Malta in the European Parliament and form part of Europe’s largest political family, the European People’s Party (EPP).
The PN’s three MEPs, Roberta Metsola, Peter Agius, and David Casa, work to defend Malta’s national interests at the European level, while contributing to the development of European policies that are fair and sustainable for all Member States. Roberta Metsola also currently serves as President of the European Parliament.
