A Nationalist Government will reduce electricity bills and invest in renewable energy
We are presenting families, businesses and people with a realistic package of measures that will ease their burdens. We are determined that, through this package, we will leave more money in people’s pockets and ensure that people who live alone are not forgotten.
The electricity meter charge will be removed for households, farmers and voluntary organisations; bills will be reduced for all households; people living alone will benefit from reductions of up to 42%; farmers and voluntary organisations will also benefit from a 15% reduction on their electricity bills
We are presenting families, businesses and people with a realistic package of measures that will ease their burdens. We are determined that, through this package, we will leave more money in people’s pockets and ensure that people who live alone are not forgotten.
This morning, during a press conference, Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg together with candidates Mark Anthony Sammut and Jonathan Muscat gave further details about the proposal announced yesterday by Alex Borg that a Nationalist Government will reduce electricity bills by an average of 30% for families and people living alone.
A Nationalist Government will remove the electricity meter rental charge from residential household bills, while further reducing the electricity bills of people who live alone by raising the threshold for a single person to qualify for the Eco-Reduction from 2,000 to 3,000 units.
Alex Borg explained how a Nationalist Government will also support farmers and voluntary organisations by removing the electricity meter rental charge for them too, while reducing their electricity bills by 15%.
The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista said that a Nationalist Government also wants to give A Fresh Start to the energy system we currently have in our country. The vision of the Partit Nazzjonalista is not a cosmetic one for the eve of an election, but a holistic one that improves people’s lives, reduces dependence on imported fuels, increases renewable energy production and strengthens the grid, among other things.
The energy policy of the Partit Nazzjonalista is clear – cheaper bills today, cleaner energy tomorrow. This, Alex Borg said, is the Fresh Start we want to bring to the country.
Mark Anthony Sammut gave a detailed explanation of the Partit Nazzjonalista’s proposals, including not only the costings but also how these will be offset in Government expenditure, thus making this measure cost neutral.
He explained how today’s realities are very different from those that existed when the current bands and thresholds were established. Therefore, bills must start reflecting this. Today, there are five household tariffs according to consumption, and currently the lowest band applies to the first 1,000 units. Under the Partit Nazzjonalista’s measure, this lowest rate will instead apply to the first 6,000 units.
A Nationalist Government will also remove the meter rental charge from household bills.
He explained how, under the current eco-reduction system, it is practically impossible for a person living alone to benefit from the eco-reduction, even though that person must pay alone for the consumption of the fridge, oven, water heater and more. These households are, per capita, the ones that typically pay the most for their energy. That is why a Nationalist Government will raise the number of units that people living alone can consume in order for them to benefit from the eco-reduction.
Mark Anthony Sammut explained how, through these measures, a person living alone will be able to benefit from a reduction of up to 42% on their bill, while household bills will be reduced by between 21% and 30%. He said that, through this package of proposals, a Nationalist Government will invest €30 million in people in the energy sector.
He explained how, at present, our country’s energy is divided between renewable energy, the Electrogas power station, the Shanghai Electric power station and the Interconnector. Through an investment of €60 million, a Nationalist Government wants to see 175GWh of energy produced from solar power through the installation of latest-generation panels on government buildings such as schools and car parks, without taking up any agricultural land.
He also explained in detail how the recurring cost of €30 million in investment in people will be paid for by reducing the costs of generation and the fines associated with carbon credits each time we use gas to generate energy. Through the energy generation plan presented, the costs and fines associated with gas generation would be eliminated for these 175GWh, effectively making this measure cost-neutral.
Mark Anthony Sammut recalled how, between 2014 and 2021, consumers were being robbed of €6.5 million a year, and the Government collected more than €50 million extra from people’s bills. We will give this back to the people.
PN candidate Jonathan Muscat also addressed the press conference and said that, apart from returning what was stolen from people, the Partit Nazzjonalista will also strengthen the country in the energy sector.
Malta remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and this places us in a vulnerable position. He said that a Labour Government has left us without an agreement for the supply of gas. This, despite the fact that we had a 10-year contract, but the Government slept on a new agreement and, four months before the current agreement expires, we still do not know what will happen.
He said that, finding itself in a last-minute panic, the Government rushed to Qatar and tried to reach an agreement for the supply of gas, because it had not acted prudently and failed to negotiate when gas prices were stable. Now it will have to enter into a short-term agreement at a far higher price – while leaving the people in the dark.
Jonathan Muscat explained how Enemalta has not presented audited accounts since 2022 – public money, with the public not knowing where it is going.
The Labour Government has ended up dragging our country into infringement proceedings imposed by the EU, which could lead to heavy fines.
A Nationalist Government wants to restore seriousness in the running of government entities, including ARMS, with leadership appointed because people are competent, not because they are close to a Minister or to a party. You cannot have people leading public entities when they have a conflict of interest.
A Nationalist Government will also ensure that bills are clear and understood by everyone, so that there is never again another robbery like the one carried out under this Government for seven whole years.
He also said that when a consumer suffers damages, as has happened several times because of power cuts, that consumer should have an automatic right to compensation – not only when the Minister decides to do them a favour. The right to compensation will be guaranteed.
