Nine years after the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta is still without justice

The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader reiterated that the PN has long maintained that the Attorney General is not properly carrying out her duties. He said that during the most important trial of the century, the Attorney General was nowhere to be seen providing the necessary support to prosecutors during the proceedings, nor have we heard a single word from her since the verdict.

The Maltese and Gozitan people are disappointed that nine years after the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta is still without justice and the person or persons who commissioned the assassination remain at large.

This was stated by Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg during an interview conducted by commentator Professor Andrew Azzopardi at Ġnien l-Istazzjon in Birkirkara this morning. During the interview, the PN Leader said that the Partit Nazzjonalista will continue insisting on the implementation of all the recommendations of the Public Inquiry and will remain the only solution to put Malta back on the right track.

The PN Leader said that throughout the trial he had responsibly chosen the difficult path of not turning the judicial process into a political football. However, following the conclusion of the trial, the Opposition would have been failing in its duty had it not spoken out and expressed its position responsibly.

Alex Borg said that Prime Minister Robert Abela cannot continue calling for prudence without providing direction. The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue standing shoulder to shoulder with a people who are now tired of hearing words and want action.

Alex Borg said that his caution should not be mistaken for weakness and warned the Government that the Opposition will take all necessary action, both in Parliament and outside it, for Malta to achieve justice.

On the jury’s verdict, Alex Borg said that it is not his role as Leader of the Opposition to pass judgement on the decision taken by the jurors. However, he said that any necessary investigation should be carried out if evidence emerges that the jurors did not reach their decision in accordance with the oath they had taken.

Asked whether the presidential pardon granted to Melvin Theuma should be withdrawn, Alex Borg said that this is a decision that must be taken by Prime Minister Robert Abela. He recalled that Robert Abela had been a consultant to the Cabinet that granted Theuma the pardon and had said that it would lead to justice being served. “Nine years later, justice has still not been served,” Alex Borg said.

Dr Borg described as concerning the fact that the Home Affairs Minister – who is responsible for the Police Force that was supposed to investigate, and continues to investigate, in order for justice to be served – is the same person who in the past publicly attacked Daphne Caruana Galizia and fuelled hatred against her. The PN Leader said that with Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield there is no necessary guarantee that the investigations that need to be carried out will be independent. Alex Borg also said that any investigation into third parties mentioned during the trial is taking place nine years too late.

Alex Borg reiterated his confidence in those members of the Police Force who carry out their duties in good faith and with professionalism, while saying that he has no confidence in those who fail to carry out their duties properly.

On the financing of political parties, Alex Borg said that the Partit Nazzjonalista has no problem discussing good governance, including the way political parties are financed. However, he expressed serious doubt as to whether the Government genuinely wants to engage in a serious discussion and take decisions on how political parties should be financed.
