PN Leader Alex Borg says Abela continues to show just how detached he is from people’s realities; Maltese families are not asking for luxury, but for a dignified life

Prime Minister Robert Abela’s statements on living standards show just how completely detached the Government is from the daily realities faced by thousands of Maltese and Gozitan families.

During an interview on the programme Analiżi on NET TV and NET FM, Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said this morning that when he heard the Prime Minister claim that people can afford more, he began to wonder which Malta Robert Abela is living in.

“Every day, I meet families who tell me that their wages run out before the end of the month, young people who, despite having good jobs, still cannot afford to buy their first home, and elderly people who must think twice about how to divide their money in order to cover medicines and everyday necessities,” Alex Borg said.

He argued that the problem begins when a Government starts believing its own propaganda.

If the Prime Minister believes that an increase in the number of boats or cars is a measure of quality of life, then he is ignoring the reality faced by the majority of people.

Alex Borg said Maltese families are not asking for luxury. They are simply asking to live with dignity in their own country, to have enough money left after a month’s work to pay their bills, and for work to once again offer them hope.

The PN Leader said the country does not need a Prime Minister who tells people how happy they should be, but a leadership that listens, understands and acts.

Alex Borg reiterated that the Partit Nazzjonalista will remain close to the people, listen to their experiences and put forward policies that address the real challenges of the cost of living, housing and quality of life.

“A country moves forward when politicians remain close to the people, not when they become detached from reality,” Alex Borg said.

During the interview, Alex Borg also spoke about the confusion witnessed this week, where the Government’s right hand appears not to know what its left hand is doing. This included the case of concrete being laid in Marsalforn, only for it to be removed the following day. He said people have a right to know who gave the order for the works to be carried out and who will foot the bill, both for laying the concrete and for removing it.

Alex Borg said the country is being governed through a culture where anything goes, a culture in which everyone says, “It was not me,” but where, ultimately, it is the public that pays the bill.

Asked about a Government that is failing to answer Parliamentary Questions and about the imbalance in broadcasting, the PN Leader said that the questions asked by MPs are raised on behalf of the people.

However, Government members are ignoring the public and failing in their obligation to be accountable to the people, just as the Government is failing the public by using the public broadcaster as its own noticeboard.

Alex Borg referred to the substantial sum raised by the PN this week on the occasion of his birthday, which will help modernise NET FM, and thanked all those who are offering their support so that the PN can continue strengthening its voice.

Asked about the voting process for his confirmation as Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista and the way forward, Alex Borg said there had been very positive feedback from councillors during the two early voting sessions. He said he is determined, with their support, to continue the work he has already started so that over the next five years the Partit Nazzjonalista will continue to grow stronger, renew itself and prepare to govern.
