Respect towards healthcare professionals must also be reflected in their working conditions

At a time when Malta is facing a shortage of healthcare professionals, politicians cannot play games with their salaries. We cannot have benchmarks that change from one group of healthcare professionals to another, as this can lead to even greater problems for our patients at Mater Dei and in other hospitals.

At a time when Malta is facing a shortage of healthcare professionals, politicians cannot play games with their salaries. We cannot have benchmarks that change from one group of healthcare professionals to another, as this can lead to even greater problems for our patients at Mater Dei and in other hospitals.

These comments were made by Paul Pace, President of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, the MUMN, during a meeting with the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista, Alex Borg, after the Government recently signed a new collective agreement with one sector of healthcare workers while once again leaving nurses out.

For his part, the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista listened to everything the representatives of the MUMN had to say and told them that, in its first 100 days, a new Nationalist Government will sit down with nurses’ representatives and negotiate a new collective agreement that gives them the financial package they deserve.

He said he wants to ensure that all workers in the healthcare sector are not only rewarded for their work, but also incentivised to continue providing their services in Malta.

Alex Borg said that while it is right to praise and thank those who are keeping the health service on its feet, beyond words and rhetoric we must give these workers the dignity and salaries they deserve.

Also present for the meeting were Partit Nazzjonalista candidates Ray Gatt and Stephen Spiteri, while MUMN President Paul Pace was accompanied by MUMN General Secretary Colin Galea and Financial Secretary George Saliba.
