People’s suffering is real, and the Government is responsible

Every minute without electricity not only causes suffering for the elderly, vulnerable people and the public in general, but also workers unable to work, businesses unable to operate and a direct blow to our country’s productivity. Every interruption to the electricity supply means an economy that stops producing, with consequences for Malta’s competitiveness and investor confidence. A country seeking to build a stronger economy cannot allow its productivity to depend on infrastructure that fails.

Robert Abela’s Government must shoulder political responsibility for the continuing power-cut crisis; the PN continues to insist on automatic compensation for families and businesses and an immediate debate on the Motion of No Confidence in Minister Miriam Dalli

The power-cut crisis in our country is continuing, with families in several localities having endured days, and in certain cases more than a week, without a stable electricity supply.

People’s suffering is real, and Robert Abela’s Government is responsible for that suffering.

During a press conference outside the Ministry for Energy, the Environment and Grand Harbour Regeneration in Valletta, Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut and Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott said that the Government is continuing to completely ignore the suffering being endured by thousands of families and businesses.

The Government initially claimed that the investment carried out was allowing supply to be restored within a few hours. It then once again blamed a Nationalist Government that left office 13 years ago, despite a report by the National Audit Office confirming a lack of investment in the high-voltage network between 2014 and 2023.

It then said that it had a five-year plan. After subsequently announcing another plan, the Prime Minister told us “sorry” and, yesterday, attempted to shift responsibility onto everyone, including Enemalta workers, except himself.

It was Robert Abela’s Government that had the responsibility to ensure that the electricity infrastructure could cope with the sharp increase in population and demand for energy.

Minister Miriam Dalli has been directly involved in this sector since 2013 and has been the Minister responsible for it for two legislatures. Despite expenditure of €140 million and works carried out in several roads, the country has once again found itself facing the same crisis.

Among other measures, the Partit Nazzjonalista is calling for:

  1. Political responsibility to be carried by Minister Miriam Dalli as the responsible minister
  2. Automatic compensation, imposed by the Regulator, for families and businesses that suffer interruptions to the service
  3. Compensation for Enemalta workers who are working under considerable pressure to resolve this crisis
  4. A full account of all the faults and breakdowns that occurred
  5. An account of how the €140 million was spent, which Minister Dalli is refusing to break down in Parliament
  6. Full transparency regarding Enemalta, including the Network Development Plan, the latest audited accounts and regarding what happened to the €60 million linked to carbon credits that had been found to be missing.

The two Shadow Ministers explained that, during the House Business Committee, the PN also requested that the Motion of No Confidence in Minister Miriam Dalli, tabled by the Opposition, be debated before Parliament adjourns for the summer recess.

A motion of no confidence in itself raises a direct issue of political responsibility and cannot be left pending for several months. Parliament cannot simply adjourn for the summer without debating this issue, leaving the public to face another two months of heat and fear of further power cuts without anyone being held responsible.

The speakers concluded by saying that Robert Abela must explain clearly why he is refusing to allow this Motion to be debated when thousands of people are suffering because of the failures of his Government. This further exposes how weak Robert Abela is when dealing with his Ministers.
