Gozitans have the right to access justice services in Gozo

Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg meets Avukati Għawdex: tribunals and boards could begin operating in Gozo before the new courthouse opens
Gozitans who need to appear before a tribunal or board should not have to travel to Malta to do so. Justice services should be designed around Gozo’s needs and be accessible to the Gozitan public.
This was one of the main points discussed during a meeting between Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg, and Avukati Għawdex – an organisation bringing together lawyers who primarily practise before the Gozo Court. The Deputy Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista, Alex Perici Calascione, was also present for the meeting.
Avukati Għawdex President Chris Said explained that Gozo’s Court has needs that differ from those of the Courts in Malta. He stressed that judicial policies and services should reflect this reality, and that tribunals and boards capable of operating in Gozo should begin doing so.
Representatives of Avukati Għawdex also discussed the need for a new courthouse in Gozo, with adequate facilities for lawyers, staff and the public. Chris Said pointed out that the current building does not even have a room for lawyers.
Alex Borg said the Partit Nazzjonalista has long called for a new courthouse in Gozo and serious investment in the island’s judicial services. He stressed, however, that Gozitans should not have to wait for the new building to be completed before services that can already be provided in Gozo become available there.
The Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader also spoke about the need for greater efficiency in the Family Court, particularly in the service of court notices.
Avukati Għawdex, which was established five years ago, also announced that the opening of the Forensic Year will be held in Gozo for the first time. While welcoming this news, the organisation stressed the importance of being involved in discussions about the future of justice in Gozo, including the planned new courthouse, which is still at the tender stage.
The PN Leader said the Opposition fully supports this call, so that justice services in Gozo are efficient and suited to the needs of Gozitans.
