Nationalist Opposition tables no-confidence motion in Minister Miriam Dalli following national power-cut crisis
The motion is based on the Government’s serious failure to provide an essential service to the Maltese and Gozitan people, following weeks of repeated power cuts that left thousands of families and businesses without electricity for long hours at the height of summer.
Opposition Leader Alex Borg, together with Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut, today tabled in Parliament a motion of censure and no confidence in the Minister responsible for energy, Miriam Dalli, while calling on the Prime Minister to immediately request her resignation or remove her from office.
The motion is based on the Government’s serious failure to provide an essential service to the Maltese and Gozitan people, following weeks of repeated power cuts that left thousands of families and businesses without electricity for long hours at the height of summer.
The Partit Nazzjonalista recalls that this is not a new situation. The same crisis occurred during the summer of 2023, when a similar motion was also tabled. Despite the Government’s promises and despite the announcement of substantial investment to strengthen the distribution network, the problem not only persisted but once again struck the country, with serious consequences for families, businesses, patients and vulnerable people.
The motion also refers to the conclusions of the National Audit Office (NAO), which, in its report on the planning of and investment in the electricity distribution network, identified serious shortcomings in Enemalta’s planning and concluded that the lack of investment in the distribution network was the main cause of the crisis.
The Partit Nazzjonalista maintains that the Government failed to plan for the country’s growing needs, despite the substantial increase in both the population and demand for electricity. This resulted in infrastructure that was unable to keep up with the reality created by the Government itself.
The PN also considers it unacceptable that, despite the scale of the problem and its impact on people’s lives, Minister Miriam Dalli has continued to refuse to shoulder political responsibility for the failure that occurred under her leadership.
The Partit Nazzjonalista believes that a minister must shoulder political responsibility when failures within their portfolio lead to a national crisis that directly affects people’s lives and health.
The Maltese and Gozitan people deserve modern infrastructure, reliable services and a Government that takes responsibility for its decisions.
