Malta needs an economy that genuinely strengthens businesses and improves people’s lives

During a meeting between the PN and The Malta Chamber, the impact of electricity supply disruptions on businesses and families was also discussed. Alex Borg said Malta needs an efficient and reliable energy system, supported by serious investment in infrastructure and renewable energy, so that the country can reduce its dependence on other countries.

There is broad agreement that Malta needs a new economic model that measures success not only through economic growth figures, but also through how productive businesses are becoming, whether wages are improving and whether families are enjoying a better quality of life.

This was stated by Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg during a meeting held this morning with The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry.

Alex Borg said that Gross Domestic Product figures do not always provide a complete picture of how the economy and businesses are performing. Malta therefore needs indicators that more realistically show how much value is being created, whether wages are increasing and whether economic growth is genuinely leading to improvements in people’s lives.

He referred to the LEAD report commissioned by The Malta Chamber, which confirms that most of the growth in Malta’s Gross Value Added is being driven by population growth, while productivity gains remain minimal.

“Malta cannot continue relying on population growth to expand its economy. We need an economy based on productivity, innovation and jobs that create greater value,” Alex Borg said.

He maintained that only such a model can genuinely ensure that businesses remain sustainable and achieve real growth, that the country’s economy is placed on a sound footing and that people’s quality of life improves in a tangible way.

The impact of electricity supply disruptions on businesses and families was also discussed during the meeting. Alex Borg said Malta needs an efficient and reliable energy system, supported by serious investment in infrastructure and renewable energy, so that the country can reduce its dependence on other countries.

Traffic congestion was another of the main issues discussed. Alex Borg said traffic is reducing productivity, increasing costs for businesses and cutting into the time workers are able to spend with their families. Malta therefore needs a long-term national plan, built on political consensus, to begin addressing the problem seriously.

The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader also spoke about the opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence and new technologies in manufacturing, which can help Maltese businesses transform their operations, increase productivity and remain competitive. He said Malta could place itself at the forefront of this sector, which can offer a secure future to many workers.

On planning, Alex Borg said the time has come for the Local Plans to be reviewed so that they reflect present-day realities and provide clear direction for future development.

“We cannot continue with development that takes place without a plan. We need planned development that respects the environment, communities and people’s quality of life,” Alex Borg said.

For their part, The Malta Chamber officials, led at the meeting with the Opposition by President William Spiteri Bailey and CEO Marthese Portelli, stressed that dialogue with the Opposition is important so that the country can understand the vision and economic alternative being offered by the Partit Nazzjonalista for when it is in government.

The Malta Chamber maintained that businesses need concrete solutions and clear direction, because investment is not built on criticism, but on confidence and predictability.

It reiterated its call for Malta to move from a volume-based economy to a value-based economy, and from growth dependent on population increases to growth driven by productivity.

The Malta Chamber said economic success should be measured through productivity, competitiveness, well-being and quality of life. To achieve this, Malta needs a modern education system, reliable energy, an efficient justice system and strong institutions.

The Partit Nazzjonalista delegation, led by PN Leader Alex Borg, attending the meeting at The Malta Chamber’s offices in Valletta included Partit Nazzjonalista Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione and Shadow Ministers Julian Borg, Rebekah Borg, Eve Borg Bonello, Conrad Borg Manché, Darren Carabott, Jerome Caruana Cilia, Ivan Castillo, Adrian Delia, Bernard Grech, Michael Piccinino, Mark Anthony Sammut and Stephen Spiteri.
