Valletta belongs first and foremost to its residents
This incident, involving a statue forming part of the decorations for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is not an isolated one. The Valletta community continues to suffer damage because this Government is allowing the capital city to belong to everyone except its own residents.
Solidarity with the Għaqda Festa Madonna tal-Karmnu
The Partit Nazzjonalista local councillors in Valletta express their solidarity with the Għaqda Festa Madonna tal-Karmnu of Valletta following yesterday’s incident, when a statue more than 100 years old was knocked to the ground and sustained considerable damage.
The incident took place as Valletta prepares to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
This incident, involving a statue forming part of the decorations for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is not an isolated one. The Valletta community continues to suffer damage because this Government is allowing the capital city to belong to everyone except its own residents.
Despite the many promises and despite all the rhetoric, while the Labour Government tries to give the impression that it has the interests of Valletta residents at heart, the facts show otherwise. Valletta residents have repeatedly become victims of circumstances whenever they are about to celebrate something in their own locality, from the Good Friday procession to every other local feast and event that is organised.
Two years ago, the procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel had to stop in Merchants Street until an electricity cable crossing the road was removed, because the authorities had failed to carry out their duties properly. This year, the same procession will have to change its route because a crane has been erected along the procession route.
This is the situation in Valletta, and it continues to deteriorate. Whenever incidents of this kind occur, rather than taking action to bring them to an end and allowing Valletta residents to enjoy what is rightfully theirs, the Government attempts to buy them off with money.
Valletta residents do not want to be bought with money. They want the opportunity to enjoy their traditions as a community, traditions that go back hundreds of years, without further disruption and disappointment.
The PN local councillors in Valletta therefore pledge to continue working solely in the interests of Valletta residents. They will also push for the Local Council to place greater pressure on the central authorities so that these insults towards Valletta residents come to an end once and for all, and so that their rights are respected.
