Government finally implements PN proposal for the cab sector
While we must continue working to improve road safety, we must show the same determination in addressing the problems affecting thousands of Maltese and Gozitan people every day. These include excessive traffic and congestion, the lack of parking, time wasted on the roads, the burden on businesses, the quality of the public transport service and the absence of long-term planning.
However, the mobility crisis does not end here – the Government must proceed with the remaining changes and address the problems affecting people, including traffic congestion, the lack of parking and the quality of public transport
The Partit Nazzjonalista welcomes the announcement that the Government will introduce a limit on the number of consecutive hours that cab drivers may work – a proposal first put forward by the Partit Nazzjonalista more than a year ago.
This is an important measure that places road safety first. Well-rested drivers mean safer roads, greater protection for passengers and fairer working conditions for those employed in the sector. We therefore welcome the fact that the Government has finally chosen to implement this Partit Nazzjonalista proposal.
However, this is only part of the solution. While cases of unfair competition still need to be addressed in this sector, Malta’s mobility crisis extends far beyond Y-plate drivers, and many other transport- and traffic-related problems remain unresolved.
The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue working constructively to put forward concrete solutions to these challenges. When the Government adopts a sound Opposition proposal, we will be the first to acknowledge and welcome it. At the same time, however, we will continue insisting that the country needs a comprehensive plan addressing all mobility challenges, not just one.
Maltese families, workers and businesses deserve a mobility system that is safer, more efficient and designed around the needs of today and tomorrow. The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue putting forward the proposals needed to make this happen.
