Enemalta workers working tirelessly throughout the electricity crisis deserve special compensation
These workers are not responsible for the failures in planning and the lack of investment that led to the crisis our country is experiencing. On the contrary, they are on the front line, working long hours, often in extreme temperatures, to minimise the impact on families and businesses.
The PN also continues to insist on automatic compensation for families and businesses whenever a consumer experiences a disruption in service, rather than an “exceptional” payment granted by the government only when the country is facing a crisis
The Partit Nazzjonalista expresses its appreciation to all Enemalta workers who, throughout this electricity crisis, have been working tirelessly in difficult conditions and under immense pressure to restore the electricity supply in several localities across Malta and Gozo.
These workers are not responsible for the failures in planning and the lack of investment that led to the crisis our country is experiencing. On the contrary, they are on the front line, working long hours, often in extreme temperatures, to minimise the impact on families and businesses.
The Partit Nazzjonalista is therefore proposing that all Enemalta workers directly involved in emergency operations during this crisis be awarded special financial compensation as a tangible recognition of their dedication, sacrifice and service.
While the Government failed in its duty to plan and invest in the country’s infrastructure, it is these workers who are carrying the burden of the consequences. It is therefore only fair that the State recognises their efforts in a tangible manner.
The Partit Nazzjonalista stresses that political responsibility for the electricity crisis remains with the Government and those who have managed the sector over recent years. This proposal does not diminish in any way the need for accountability over how Malta ended up in this situation.
Enemalta workers deserve the respect, gratitude and recognition of the entire country. The Partit Nazzjonalista will continue to insist that they receive the compensation they deserve, while continuing to hold the Government accountable for the serious shortcomings that led to this crisis.
At the same time, the Partit Nazzjonalista will also continue to insist on the immediate introduction of an automatic compensation mechanism for families and businesses that have suffered losses as a result of prolonged or repeated power cuts. This should also cover food and medicines that had to be discarded, as well as damaged appliances and equipment.
This system should be automatic and triggered according to established criteria whenever a consumer experiences a disruption in service. It should not be activated only on an “exceptional” basis whenever the Government decides that families and businesses affected by an electricity crisis should be compensated.
Above all, beyond any compensation, the Partit Nazzjonalista expects electricity supplies to be restored to affected residents as quickly as possible. More than compensation, what the Maltese and Gozitan people want is to be able to continue with their daily lives, even at the height of summer, as one would expect in a normal country in 2026.
