The Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista calls for an urgent parliamentary debate on the electricity supply crisis

The serious situation once again being experienced by thousands of Maltese and Gozitan families as a result of power cuts and voltage problems requires immediate answers and solutions. The Leader of the Opposition, Alex Borg, will therefore request that Parliament urgently debate this crisis, which continues to affect the country.

In a live message on social media, the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista said that another summer has arrived, yet the problems remain the same. It seems that in our country, having electricity during the summer has become a luxury.

Alex Borg said that Maltese families have been facing power cuts and voltage problems for at least four summers. In recent days, thousands of people were left without electricity, with some having to endure as many as four nights in intense heat, while others suffered damage to household appliances as a result of voltage fluctuations.

All of this is the fault of a Government that has brought the country’s infrastructure to its knees and neglected it for years, despite the sharp increase in the population.

Despite the inconvenience caused by roads being dug up for trenching works, and despite the considerable work being carried out by Enemalta employees, it is clear that this Government has completely failed to plan the electricity system properly, and it is the people who are paying the price.

In the same message, Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut said that what families and businesses are experiencing is the direct result of years of inadequate planning and investment in the national grid. He stressed that Enemalta employees are carrying out their duties with dedication, but that the problem lies in leadership and planning at political level.

He said it is unacceptable for the country to face the same crisis every summer and called on the Government to provide a clear account of what has been done, what has not been done and what concrete measures will be taken to prevent this situation from recurring year after year.

Many people are having to bear the cost of damage to appliances caused by voltage problems, while others are being forced to throw away food and medicines that have been ruined because of the power cuts.

In his message, the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista, Alex Borg, said that he would request an urgent parliamentary debate on the situation so that the Government provides an account of how the country reached this point, what immediate measures it is taking to address the crisis and what concrete plan it has to ensure that the country does not continue experiencing the same failures summer after summer.

The Partit Nazzjonalista has long insisted on greater seriousness, planning and competence in an essential service such as the electricity supply. In 2026, having electricity in one’s home cannot be regarded as a luxury, but as a basic right for every family and every business.
