The Partit Nazzjonalista will be a serious, credible and vigilant Opposition, one that scrutinises, demands accountability and insists on transparency, always placing the interests of the Maltese and Gozitan people first and foremost.

A serious Opposition today translates into a strong government tomorrow.

During the Parliamentary debate on the Address by the President of Malta at the State Opening of the 15th Parliamentary Legislature, Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg said that the people had spoken through their vote, and that their choice must be respected. However, he stressed that respect for that choice does not mean silence. On the contrary, respect for that decision means that the Opposition has a major responsibility to ensure that the people’s choice is respected and that what was promised is now delivered with serious and accountable governance.

Alex Borg said that a healthy democracy does not exist through Government alone, but also requires an Opposition that monitors carefully, checks and balances that function properly, and a Parliament that is given the respect it deserves. For this reason, the Partit Nazzjonalista will not accept a culture in which parliamentary questions are met with evasive replies, information of public interest is hidden behind excuses and bureaucracy, or Parliament is used merely to announce decisions that have already been taken.

The Leader of the Opposition said that the time for empty promises is now over. People are no longer waiting for fine words or projects drawn up on paper, but for results that make a difference in their everyday lives. Families want peace of mind in the face of the rising cost of living. Young people want real solutions in the property market. Pensioners want dignity and concrete assistance. Small businesses want an environment in which they can grow, and workers want an economy that gives them quality of life, better wages and time with their families.

Alex Borg said that the Opposition’s measure will be clear: every Government decision will be judged on whether it places the people’s interests first. Where the Government introduces good measures for families, businesses and democracy, the Partit Nazzjonalista will be constructive. But where the Government hides information, falls short on transparency, spends public funds without accountability, or takes decisions that go against the national interest, the Opposition will hold it responsible.

He stressed that the State, the institutions, public finances, public land and power do not belong to the Government, but to the people. Therefore, those who hold power must give account, those who take decisions must explain them, and those who spend public funds must show how and why.

Alex Borg also said that the Partit Nazzjonalista will not be a passive or reactive Opposition, but an alternative government from now. This means serious parliamentary work, proposals, research, continuous contact with people, and a presence in communities, among businesses, workers, organisations, farmers, fishermen, professionals, young people, the elderly and families.

The Leader of the Opposition concluded by saying that this legislature will be a test for the Government, for the Opposition, for Parliament and for Maltese politics as a whole. The Partit Nazzjonalista will be a strong, vigilant and determined Opposition, one that defends the common good, strengthens accountability and transparency, and builds, step by step, an alternative government based on responsible leadership.

Above all, it will be a serious Opposition today in order to serve as a strong government tomorrow.
