Nine years on, we are still asking who ordered the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia
“Malta cannot close this chapter until it has done everything possible to uncover the whole truth.”
PN Leader Alex Borg announces that, during tomorrow’s parliamentary debate, the Opposition will table the recommendations of the Public Inquiry – we must ensure that the authorities are free to work without fear; Malta cannot close this chapter until it has done everything possible to uncover the whole truth
This assassination shook our country. Nine years later, justice has still not been served for Daphne’s family, and we are still asking who ordered the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
During a press conference held in the presence of the Partit Nazzjonalista Parliamentary Group, Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said that, while he and the PN exercised caution throughout the trial, the time has now come to speak out and ensure that both the family and the public learn the truth.
Alex Borg said that this is his duty as Leader of the Opposition. It is also the duty of the Government, which is responsible for protecting citizens by ensuring that justice is served.
While reiterating his confidence in the judicial process, the Leader of the Opposition said that he has no confidence in a Government which the Public Inquiry itself found responsible for creating the culture of impunity that led to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Alex Borg said that, over the past few hours, he had spoken to Peter Caruana Galizia and to Daphne’s children. He said that nobody can truly understand what is being experienced by those who lost someone they loved and who, following this trial, have still not seen justice served.
The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader said that, over the past nine years, Malta has seen a change in Prime Minister but not a change in Government. Consequently, this Government cannot provide any guarantee that justice will be served.
A few years ago, three judges told us that the Labour Government must shoulder responsibility for this assassination.
Alex Borg said that our country now faces a fundamental question: what will the Maltese State do to ensure that this case is truly solved?
The Partit Nazzjonalista Leader stressed that this case did not begin yesterday. It began when the journalist was targeted by systematic campaigns of demonisation led by members of the Government and people associated with it. This is why the Public Inquiry concluded that the State had created a culture of impunity.
The Labour Government was mentioned repeatedly throughout the trial that has just concluded, with facts emerging that exposed the close links between several implicated individuals and senior Government officials. The proximity between criminals and politicians was such that, for the first time in our country’s history, criminals had access to Castille.
The Judge has now ordered that testimony and material from the trial concerning third parties be referred for investigation wherever there is suspicion of criminal responsibility. Alex Borg insisted that the Police must investigate all of this immediately.
This alone, Alex Borg said, demonstrates the gravity of the situation before us.
He asked whether the Labour Government had genuinely done everything possible to uncover the truth, or whether there had been interventions intended to bury it.
Alex Borg recalled that Robert Abela was part of the Cabinet that created the culture of impunity that led to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. He recalled how, a few months ago, Robert Abela called an early election – and today we know why. He also recalled how Robert Abela shelved the recommendations of the Public Inquiry because, for him, partisan interests come before the interests of the people and the country.
The time has come to move from words to action. This is why the Opposition requested the urgent parliamentary debate that will be held tomorrow. During this debate, the Partit Nazzjonalista will table in Parliament the recommendations of the Public Inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, together with proposals for the legislative changes our country needs.
Alex Borg said that he expects the Government to agree with the Opposition tomorrow and implement these recommendations.
We must guarantee the freedom of the police, the judiciary, journalists, public officials, businesses, and every Maltese and Gozitan citizen – so that they may carry out their duties without fear or favour and receive the protection they need.
Alex Borg said that the reform of our institutions must continue so that no individual, whoever they may be, is allowed to wield excessive power.
“Malta cannot close this chapter until it has done everything possible to uncover the whole truth.”
